Privacy policy

Your cards stay yours.

Franki is made to work without knowing who you are. This page says what the app does with your information, which is very little.

Effective 15 October 2026

The short version

What stays on your device

Your decks, cards, pictures, recorded sounds, review history and settings are stored on your iPhone. If you use the widgets or Apple Watch app, Franki shares what they need (such as your next due card and how many cards are due) between the app, its widgets and your Watch, on your own devices.

iCloud sync

Decks, cards, images and review history sync through your private iCloud database, so they follow you to a new phone or an iPad. This data is stored by Apple in your iCloud account, under Apple's privacy policy. It's private to your Apple Account: the developer can't read it. You can see and manage the iCloud data apps keep in your Apple Account's iCloud settings on your iPhone.

Making cards with AI

When you ask Franki to write cards from your notes, a photo, a scanned page, a PDF or a web page, the text is processed on your iPhone by Apple Intelligence. Nothing you give it is sent to the developer or to any AI service; the one exception is Franki Cloud, below, and only when you choose it. Explain This Card and Improve This Card also run on the device.

Franki Cloud (optional)

Franki Cloud makes cards from PDF pages that the on-device model can't read well, such as scans, tables and tests with an answer key, up to 100 pages per import. It's used only when you choose it, and Franki asks your permission before the first time it sends anything.

Web pages

Franki only goes online to read a web page when you ask Generate to read one. It downloads that page directly from the site you entered, as a browser would, so that site sees an ordinary request from your iPhone. The page's text is then used on the device to write cards.

Camera, microphone, photos and notifications

You can change any of these permissions at any time in the Settings app.

Backups, export and sharing

Full backups, CSV export and shared decks are files that you create and send where you choose. Franki doesn't keep a copy anywhere else. When someone opens a deck you shared, Franki adds the deck without your progress.

Information Apple may share with developers

Franki itself adds no analytics. If you've turned on sharing with app developers in your iPhone's settings (Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements → Share With App Developers), Apple may share crash reports and app usage statistics with the developer. You can turn this off at any time.

Children

Franki doesn't knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new effective date.
